Bad news for several BMW motorcycle owners, as the German brand is recalling several models because their front and rear brake calipers may corrode, which can cause the pistons to stick or drag in the caliper bore.
The recall affects three two-wheelers from the BMW Motorrad lineup, the BMW G310R (2017-2020) and BMW G310GS (2018-2020) motorcycles, and the BMW C400X scooter (2019). In total, 5,938 bikes are affected by this recall.
Not all recalls are created equally. While some recalls deal with serious defects and possible situations, there are others that while still technically being a safety issue, still fall short of causing truthful concern. Today’s recall announcement is the latter, in our opinion.
As such, 12,733 motorcycles from the Harley-Davidson lineup that can use Harley-Davidson Detachable Tour-Pak Luggage Conversion kit are being recalled because the kit did not include replacement red reflectors.
As such, these motorcycles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment” and therefore needed to be recalled with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
This latest recall comes to us from the Piaggio Group Americas, as it affects a number of models from the Aprilia and Moto Guzzi lineups.
The issue stems from the front brake master cylinder, which may drag or inadvertently apply the drags, which can cause the motorcycle to suddenly stop and/or stall. This may happen without the rear brake light illuminating.
Specifically, this recall affects the Moto Guzzi Audace 1400 and Eldorado 1400 (2016-2018), Moto Guzzi California 1400 (2017-2018), Moto Guzzi MGX 21 Bagger (2017), Aprilia Mana 850 (2013-2014), Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 (2014-2016), Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 (2018-2019), and Aprilia Shiver 900 (2018) motorcycles.
Suzuki Motor of America is recalling 2,640 units of its Suzuki GSX250R street bike (model years 2018 & 2019) because of an issue that can cause the rear brake light not to illuminate when the brakes are applied.
According to the recall documents, the issue stems from a water intrusion that may corrode the rear brake light switch which can cause the rear brake light to fail to illuminate or remain illuminated continuously when the brake is not applied.
Obviously, the lack of a functioning rear brake light (or one that won’t turn off) creates a safety issue for the rider and those around them, which is why a recall was initiated with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
There is bad news if you have one of a handful of small-displacement motorcycle models sold by Honda, as 3,898 units are being recalled for issues with their gearbox.
The recall affects certain 2019 Honda CB300R, as well as 2018 Honda CBR300R, Honda CRF250L, Honda CRF250L Rally, and 2018-2019 Honda Rebel (CMX300) motorcycles.
The issues stems from the circlip on the transmission’s main shaft, which may detach allowing for gear misalignment.
Recall news from Ducati North America today, as the entire Ducati Panigale V4 lineup is being recalled because fuel might spray out of the bike’s fuel tank…again.
This happens when there is an excessive amount of pressure in the fuel tank, which may cause fuel to spray when opening the fuel cap. Obviously, spraying fuel can lead to a safety hazard, hence the recall.
In total, 1,880 superbike are affected by this recall, which includes all the Panigale V4 variants from 2017 thru 2019 – this means the Panigale V4, Panigale V4 S, Panigale V4 Speciale, and Panigale V4 R.
Suzuki Motor of America is recalling roughly 300 units of its Burgman 200 scooters (2018 & 2019 model year machines) because the rivet connections may fail on the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which would allow the movable drive plate to break.
According to the recall documents, continued use of the faulty CVT drive could lead to the motorcycle no longer being operational.
Due to improper shape of the holes for the rivets that fasten the component parts of the movable driven face, the rivet connections may be insufficient.
Almost 200 units of the Yamaha YZF-R3 motorcycle from the 2019 model year are being recalled by Yamaha Motor Corp. USA because of issues manufacturing their front brake lever, which may break because of metal porosity.
In affected units, there is the potential for the front brake lever to have been manufactured with porosities in the material, which could allow the lever to break while applying a strong gripping force.
This means that a broken lever could cause sudden loss of front braking ability and a crash with injury or death.
Another recall for you, this time from the three-wheeled world, as Polaris continues to recall its Slingshot autocar because of issues with the seat belt and seats being able to detach and possibly slide.
It is of note that this is the third recall announcement (1st and 2nd) that has been issued by Polaris for a seat belt safety concern, which now affects 3,305 units from the 2018 and 2019 model years.
If you have a 2019 model year Triumph Speed Twin, you might want to pay attention to this recall from Triumph Motorcycles America. It affects 726 motorcycles, and relates to the radiator hose routing.
According to Triumph, an internal audit discovered that improper routing on the 2019 Triumph Speed Twin’s coolant expansion hose may cause it to contact the exhaust header pipe, which can damage the hose, and result in a coolant leak near the rear tire.
If the coolant spills near the rear tire, it can create a loss of traction for the motorcycle, which could lead to the motorcycle crashing.
Another recall that centers around braking components is hitting us this week, and this one concerns the Scout lineup of motorcycles from the Indian Motorcycle Company.
The recall focuses on the ABS unit for the Indian Scout, Scout Bobber, and Scout Sixty motorcycles from the 2019 model year. In total, 2,702 motorcycles are affected by the recall.
It should be noted that this recall is an extension of a previous recall by Indian for the Scout motorcycle, which was reported last year.
