BMW Motorrad Has Its Best Sales Year Ever in 2021

The European brands continue to share their good news from 2021, with BMW Motorrad boasting of its record sales performance last year.

To that end, BMW says that it sold 194,261 units in 2021, up +14.8% from the previous year. This total means a sales volume that is the best ever for BMW Motorrad.

To get to that success, the Germans leaned on the European and Asian markets for its results.

Accordingly in Europe, it was the UK (9,263 units / 26.6%), Italy (16,034 units / +15.2 %), Spain (12,616 units / +14.4 %), and France (19,887 units / +13.4 %) that were the big growth drivers in sales.

These results helped propel BMW Motorrad to sell 9,100 more units in Europe during 2021 than in 2020, despite sales in BMW’s home market of Germany stalling at 25,972 units (-5.6%).

In Asia, BMW saw big growth in the Chinese market, selling 14,309 units for a gain of 21.4% compared to last year. India also performed for the German brand, nearly doubling sales (102.5%) with 5,191 bikes sold.

Here in the United States, BMW Motorrad cleaned up on the back of a very strong domestic market, with 16,030 motorcycles and scooters sold for a gain over 2020 of 32.1%.

“The fact that we still managed to finish 2021 with this fantastic result for BMW Motorrad not only makes me happy, but also incredibly proud,” said Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad.

“It’s precisely in times of crisis where you can see how well a team sticks together. This year, I would therefore like to express my special thanks to all employees as well as to the BMW Motorrad business partners, who made this success possible thanks to their personal commitment and flexibility. My sincere thanks also goes to our customers for their loyalty, trust and support.”

Looking at the data by model, it shouldn’t surprise long-time followers of the Bavarian brand to hear that the company’s boxer-twin lineup led the way on sales, with R1250GS and R1250GS Adventure accounting for over 60,000 units (roughly 30% of total sales).

In total, the entire “R” bike lineup accounted for about half of BMW’s motorcycle sales in 2021, which is a pretty astounding result when you think about it.

BMW Motorrad is also interestingly disclosing the sales of the BMW M1000RR superbike – the first sport bike from the brand to hold the iconic “M” designation.

With 1,070 units sold in its opening year, BMW Motorrad is treating the M1000RR’s debut as a win, though that number is perhaps a paltry sum when considering it is a worldwide tally.

Compare that sales figured to the recently updated BMW S1000R, which sold 4,796 units during the same time period.

Despite these setbacks on the sports side of the equation, BMW Motorrad is surely enjoying its best sales results ever, as it closes in on the 200k-unit mark for 2022.

“I look forward to 2022 with great confidence as we start the year with what is sure to be the strongest product offering ever. Our four cruiser models from the BMW R 18 model family are entering their first full year of sales together,” continued BMW Motorrad Head, Markus Schramm.

“In addition, in the first few months of 2022 alone, the market launches of the all-electric BMW CE 04 and our four superior 6-cylinder models K 1600 GT/GTL/B and Grand America, which have been further improved in all respects, are absolute highlights in our range and will generate a further sales drive in the first half of the year.”

“We also have a lot planned for the second half of 2022, so our customers and fans are in store for a number of surprises.”
