The New Honda Africa Twin Is Coming Next Week

Around this time next week, the new Honda Africa Twin will drop. If you have been keeping up on the news, this news shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.

We have known for a while now that the Honda Africa Twin would be getting an update for Euro5 for the 2020 model year, which meant a displacement increase to around the 1,100cc mark.

Since that early news, we have seen some photos and details leak, and now Honda Motor Europe is making it obvious that we will see the new Honda Africa Twin (CRF1100L) officially debut on September 23rd.

The changes for the 2020 include a displacement increase of 86cc (1,084cc in total), to help fill the power void that comes with the new European emission standards. To that vein, the new Africa Twin is said to make 101hp by our colleagues at Motorcycle.com, which is a good bump over the current figure of 94hp.

The Africa Twin will come in two flavors for the 2020 model year, with the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports model being the off-road variant, with knobby tires, crash protection, and other dirt-focused goodies.

The big news is that a larger fuel tank is expected (along with reworked body panels), with the figure 24 liters (6.3 gallons) tipped for the Adventure Sports model – that is over a gallon more of fuel for ADV riders.

We can expect both a standard gearbox option, as well as dual-clutch transmission (DCT) to be available on both variants of the CRF1100L, as it was on the CRF1000L.

Other expected items are daylight running lights (DRL), a new TFT dash (to replace the positively archaic one that came before), and a revised subframe on the ADV model.

What remains to be seen though is whether this is the “world premiere” is the one Honda has teased for the 2019 AIMExpo, which begins Thursday next week. Big Red has also promised to show us a model that previously has never been to the US market.

Stay tuned, it seems a bit of Honda news is about to drop.
