We’re eagerly awaiting December 17th here at the Asphalt & Rubber office, as that is the official movie premiere of Tron: Legacy. A mix of computer geekiness, state-of-the-art special effects, The Dude, Olivia Wilde, and of course lightcycles, Tron: Legacy is about as close to an A&R wet dream as you can get.

While we try and contain ourselves from giggling like little schoolgirls, technology news blog TechCrunch got a chance to sit down with Daniel Simon, the designer of the new Tron lightcycle (you might remember Simon from his renowned Cosmic Motors work), and ask him about revisiting the lightcycle design (air flaps!) in Tron: Legacy. That interview and a boatload of Tron: Legacy concept sketches are after the jump.

As Ducati gets ready to unveil its 2011 line-up in Milan tomorrow, there’s one bike we are more than certain won’t make the showcase: the Ducati Tron Lightcycle. While Ducati is expected to make a cameo-appearance in the new Tron Legacy movie, we don’t think the Bologna-based company’s product placement will go quite as far as this Ducati fan’s imagination. One of the better photoshops we’ve seen in a while, the oil filter protruding from the bottom of the bike makes us squirm with delight. Apparently in the future though, Ducatis have a wet-clutch, hmm…

Being products of the Nintendo generation, Asphalt & Rubber can thank movies like Tron and Akira for piquing our interest in motorcycles at an early age. While there have been several attempts to build Kaneda’s feet-forward steed , replicas of the Tron lightcycle prove to be more elusive.

With Tron Legacy set to come out later this year, some custom bike builders have risen to the challenge to complete our ultimate geek-meets-motorcycling dreams, and are offering 5 custom made road-going Tron lightcycles for purchase on eBay.

Disney has just released the second trailer for its upcoming sequel to the 1980’s movie Tron. Everyone here at the Asphalt & Rubber office was pumped for this movie after the first trailer was released, now there’s pandimonium under way…and Olivia Wilde isn’t helping matters much. Tron Legacy comes out December 17, 2010. Check past the break for Jeff Bridges, Michael Sheen, Bruce Boxleitner, and one on-ramp hopping Ducati Sport Classic all wrapped up in eye-candy goodness.

Tron Legacy is due to come out in 2010, picking up the story from the original Tron. The sequel will continue the story as if 20 years have gone by, with the Tron server sitting in isolation, honing its game. Of course one of the best parts about the new Tron, is the new Tron light cycle, which will be faster and more realistic than its predecessor. Returning to the cast is Jeff Bridges, playing Kevin Flynn, and joining the story is Olivia Wilde, of House M.D. fame. HD trailer after the jump.
