BMW’s Entire Boxer Range Gets an Update for 2019

We knew for the 2019 model year that the R1200GS would become the R1250GS – the venerable adventure-touring machine getting an engine upgrade for the next model cycle. With 1254cc of displacement, and rumors of variable valve timing, it was of course inevitable that BMW Motorrad would bring its new boxer engine to the rest of its “R” line. We just didn’t think it would be all at once

Tipped by filings with the California Air Resources Board (CARB), we see though that the entire lineup of R1200 motorcycles will be getting a new engine for 2019. This means that the BMW R1250GS, BMW R1250GS Adventure, BMW R1250R, BMW R1250RS, and BMW R1250RT are on the way.

The move is a bold one by BMW Motorrad, though perhaps not too surprising considering the Germans revealed that they would be showing nine new motorcycles this new bike season. With five motorcycles set to get the updated boxer engine, we now know more than half of what to expect from the Bavarians.

As for the “R” bikes, we can expect similar power figures, to the tune of 134hp. The power increase comes with a weight increase well. Something we knew already from previous leaked info, but now confirmed with the CARB documents.

We foresee the entire lineup of R1250 models to debut next month at the INTERMOT show in Cologne, Germany. The expectation is that this will be a modest upgrade, with engine being the biggest of the changes made, along with some visual refinements. But, we could be pleasantly surprised. We will have to wait until Cologne to know for sure.
