The upside to no motorcycle shows is that a new motorcycle model can debut at a moment’s notice. Such is the case with the 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R, which just dropped on the internets.
As the name suggests, KTM has taken the very competent 790 Adventure R, and dialed things up a notch by 90cc. As if that wasn’t enough, there is a KTM 890 Adventure R Rally for 700 lucky owners worldwide (200 in the USA).
KTM 890 Adventure R
First off, KTM tells us that the 889cc parallel-twin engine features 105hp and 74 lbs•ft of torque, thanks to an extra 2mm in the bore and 3mm in the stroke (compared to the 790 model).
The compression on the motor has also been increased, while the crankshaft has 20% more rotating mass, again compared to the 790 model.
With the added torque and horsepower that is expected from the larger engine displacement, it is good to know as well that KTM has reinforced the clutch on the 890 Adventure R.
The traction control and ABS has also been improved upon, though the updated up/down quickshifter still remains an optional item on the package. Although, there is a new handlebar switch for the cruise control functions. So…there’s that.
Working down to the frame, there is an aluminum steering head tube now, along with a lighter subframe design.
Suspension is handled by fully adjustable WP XPLOR 48mm forks (240mm of travel), while the rear suspension is a WP XPLOR PDS shock (240mm of travel) that is also fully adjustable, and includes separate settings for high-speed and low-speed compression.
With a tubeless 21″ wheel at the front, and a tubeless 18″ wheel in the rear, the Austrians say that the KTM 890 Adventure R is ready for mousses, and the wheels come shod with Metzeler Karoo 3 tires.
KTM 890 Adventure R Rally
For those who want to take the KTM 890 Adventure R to the next level, there is also the Rally edition to consider.
Only 700 units of the 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R Rally will be made, and only 200 of those will be coming to the United States, making this a rather exclusive affair.
For the added coin (though KTM USA hasn’t given a price tag yet) and exclusivity, you do get some extra goodies.
For starters, the KTM 890 Adventure R Rally comes with the higher-spec cone-valved WP XPLOR Pro Components suspension pieces, which give 270mm of travel (30mm more than the R model).
There is also a special Akrapovič exhaust, which is 35% lighter than the stock unit, along with a flat racing seat that gives the 890 Adventure R Rally a 910mm (35.8″) seat height.
On the electronics front, the “Rally” mode and up/down quickshifter come standard. There are also rally foot rests, clear windscreen and winglets, and a carbon fiber tank protector, to round out the package.
If you like what you see here, you can pre-order the KTM 890 Adventure R Rally via only the KTM website, on November 2nd.
There is no word yet on pricing for either the 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R or the 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R Rally.
