Officially Official: KTM 790 Adventure R Prototype

We were the first outlet to bring you photos of the KTM 790 Adventure R prototype, but now this 799cc trail-shredding machine is out in the wild, and we can share with you more specs, details, and higher resolution photos.

The first point is the obvious, the KTM 790 Adventure R will not be a 2018 model, but instead will debut for the 2019 model year.

It shares a parallel-twin engine with the KTM 790 Duke, which also debuted today at the EICMA show in Milan. The 105hp engine is a fully stressed part of the steel-tube chassis, which means there should be excellent weight savings for the 790 Adventure R.

A full electronics suite is expected as well, with the 790 Duke already showing itself to be fully stocked against the competition.

Speaking of which, the 2019 KTM 790 Adventure R will have plenty of competition in its middleweight ADV category, with that territory being the hot ticket for the 2018 and 2019 model years.

Virtually every brand has a new or revised competitor in this adventure-touring space, though we think the KTM will hold its own.

In serious contention for our bike of EICMA 2017, what do you think of the KTM 790 Adventure R now that you’ve had a proper look at it?

Of note are the bulbous panels low and on the sides of the KTM 790 Adventure R prototype, which we still haven’t fully figured out.

Extra storage? Low-slung fuel tanks for better weight distribution? Leg protection for the rider? Our jury is still out.
