WSBK: If Superpole Was Monopoly, Ben Spies Could Have Built a Hotel by Now ben spies wsbk superpole kyalami 560x371

Ben Spies took his 6th straight Superpole this year, this time at the Kyalami circuit, beating out Michel Fabrizio by a mere one thousandth of a second. Making Spies the second ridr ever to win 6 WSBK poles in a row, a honor previously held alone by American Doug Polen, who accomplished the feat in 1991.

Spies led from his first fast lap in the third round of the Superple, with a time of 1’37.366, but as the final seconds ticked away, Xerox Ducati’s Michel Fabrizio bested the American with a blistering 1’37.289. Fabrizio’s joy was to be short lived however, as just seconds later, Ben Spies crossed the line on his Yamaha R1 to win the Superpole with a time of 1’37.288. That’s a difference of just one thousandth of a second.

Third place went to Max Biaggi on the Aprilia RSV4 who also set the top speed record at the Kyalami, while fourth place Noriyuki Haga who is still recovering from his pigeon encounter back at Monza.

The second row of the starting grid will see Jonathan Rea on his Honda Ten Kate and satellite Guandalini Ducati rider Jakub Smrz, Carlos Checa will be starting in 7th place, while Spies team mate Tom Sykes is in 8th.
