Ducati has been hogging the news the past few weeks, thanks in large part to the debut of the most important motorcycle the Italian motorcycle manufacturer has ever released. With Ducati up for sale and being valued at €1 billion, the Ducati 1199 Panigale sets the record straight that Bologna has not strayed from its sport bike and racing heritage with the release of bikes like the Hypermotard, Multistrada 1200, and Diavel. With Ducati hosting the Panigale’s international press launch in Abu Dhabi at the Yas Marina Circuit (click here to let Ducati know that you wish A&R had been invited to this launch), the initial reports from the assembled press is that all the concerns about Ducati, its frameless chassis design, and its future can be laid to rest.

With a hybrid chain/gear-driven camshaft, titanium valves, a wet slipper clutch, a ride-by-wire throttle, rider-selectable “riding mode” system, and 15,000 mile major service intervals, the Superquadro v-twin motor alone is a major step for Ducati with its Superbike engine design. And, if you add in the first full-LED headlight on a produciton motorcycle, the first electronically-adjustable suspension on a sport bike, the first motorcycle engine braking control system, as well as the first GPS-assisted data acquisition system for a production motorcycle, the total package of the 1199 redefines the word “superbike” and takes the next logical technological step forward in this market segment…and we’ve got over 160 images of the Ducati 1199 Panigale waiting for you after the jump.

    Ducati needs to take a lesson from Honda on this thing and sell a version as a track day baby. All the Ohlins and Termi love, but no lights or street BS to pull off. A bike like this is silly on the street anyway.

    John, I can certainly appreciate the thought of owning the bike with no pretense for posing whatsoever. To me, it’s simply the most achingly beautiful motorcycle I’ve ever seen (in Tricolore dress, that is). I don’t particularly care what anybody else thinks of my bikes. As such, for example, I’d be quite happy on a Monster in “lila glamour” purple. I loves me some lilac/purple hues.

    As I said in a different thread, one of these in a 400cc package would be my desert island bike. Not gonna happen lest I manage to cough up the billion Euros to buy the damn company myself. ROTFL.

    I have the 1098 S / F and seldom ever ‘red line’ it – but love the way she glides and the power delivery is sublime / just effortless.

    The Panigale is a dream.

    100 % to Ducati for giving us aspirations and desires and something stylish to work towards

    Looks nice from the front and back, but horrible from the side. Interesting to note, that the exhaust elbow coming through the fairing on the right hand side was not in the sketches. Maybe someone miscalculated there…

    Wetman, it actually does look like it’s in the sketches above. But I agree with you. Actually, I’m more critical than you. It’s not god awful like a ZX-10R, but I think they could have done better aesthetically. Technnically, it’s gorgeous though.

    If we are gonna go into nitpicking i have to say i STILL HATE the shape of the “snow plow section”. Other than that ? Pure Bliss.

    This bike is the most beautiful creation since the 916. Nothing has come close until now. I dont get how its silly for the street though ? Yes, you probably wont get to ride it on its limits but then again, who could ? If your’e not a proffesstional racer, stop dreaming and telling the world how fast u are, coz you’re not.

    Most important bike… ever for Ducati?
    I know it’s been discussed in an earlier review of the Panigale launch, but I still have to counter that the honour of ‘most important’ Ducati should go to the 916, or Monster.

    In the late 80’s – early 90’s Ducati didn’t have much of an inspiring lineup. Remember the Paso? And weren’t they teetering on bankruptcy many times under Cagiva?

    Then the Monster and the 916 came along.

    The Monster brought a timeless style, and if half of Ducati’s sales volume isn’t important, I don’t know what is.

    The 916 – liquid cooling, single side swing arm, underseat exhaust and sexy ‘supermodel’ styling.

    Ducati went from weird brand with rattly clutches, to ‘gotta have it’ aspirational brand almost overnight.

    To me, that is most important. the Panigale is more evolution.
