If you have a Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 or Harley-Davidson Sportster S in your garage, then your bike likely needs to head back to the dealership for this latest recall from the Bar & Shield brand.
Affecting 3,917 motorcycles, the recall from Harley-Davidson centers around the the instrument cluster, which may not display the speedometer and neutral indicator at startup when the module is below freezing temperatures.
Because of this issue, these motorcycles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 123, “Motorcycle Controls and Displays” and need to be recalled and fixed.
According to recall documents, the failure is due to an error in the instrument cluster module software, as the instrument cluster may not display the speedometer or neutral indicator, as required by FMVSS 123, if the temperature of the instrument cluster is below 32° F.
Testing indicates that the instrument cluster will self-heat during vehicle operation, which means that this condition may only occur at cold startup, when the instrument cluster temperature is below freezing.
Signs of the issue being present on an affected motorcycles are that an error message will be displayed at vehicle startup.
If the operator ignores the warning, and decides to operate the vehicle anyway, that decision may increase the risk of a crash due to the lack of a speedometer and/or neutral indicator.
To remedy the issue, Harley-Davidson dealers will update the instrument cluster module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 8, 2022.
