Motorcyclings Most Grueling Single Day Race? red bull hare scramble erzberg rodeo

At over to 5,000 miles long, and with 14 days of competition, the 2013 Dakar Rally may be the most grueling event you can race on a motorcycle. But what about the most grueling single-day race? That honor would have to go to the Red Bull Hare Scamble at the Erzberg Rodeo. An enduro event like no other, the 2012 edition saw 500+ competitors at the starting line, but only seven actually finish the race.

An active open-air iron mine the rest of the year, the “Iron Giant” hosts some of the most determined enduro and trials riders in the world each year. A test of bike control, navigation, stamina, and a bit of luck, we imagine you will be tired simply after watching the hour-long video that is waiting for you beyond the jump. As for The Dakar? Imagine something like this for two weeks straight and you would be in the right ballpark.

Jonny Walker won last year year, Taddy Blazusiak won in 2011 and 2010. I think both Jonny and Taddy were all running Metzeler 6 Days Extreme enduro tires. Certainly in 2011 and 2012 they were. Can anyone confirm?

this is a completely different animal to the Dakar… this is rocks, rocks, more rocks and then some rocks.
Nasty arse stuff for any enduro rider… I could not imagine a whole event racing over these things.

    good luck to them all.

  3. Dang. That was absolutely EPIC.

This used to be David Knight’s event. He’d finish it so fast, he was often seen fresh after a shower by the time the 2nd place finisher crossed the line.. Does he still participate?

    come on!
    2007 Blazusiak wins
    2008 Blazusiak wins
    2009 Blazusiak wins
    2010 Blazusiak wins
    2011 Blazusiak wins
..and in 2012 he did not participate as he was racing in AMA series
this is an epic story, his whole professional career in enduro started there!

Knight is still riding but he crashed during this years prologue

All these Extreme Enduros have been my new favorite form of motorcycle racing. Amazing what these guys can do with a motorbike.
