The Austrians refer to the KTM 1290 Super Duke R as “The Beast” whenever possible, and as our trained crash test dummy Iwan found out first hand, the name is appropriate for the 180hp streetfighter. The first motorcycle from KTM with traction control, the new Super Duke R is mighty, but pliable…and for good reason: KTM designed it that way.

It may not have as robust of an electronics package as the Aprilia Tuono V4 R APRC ABS, but the 1290 Super Duke R has unsettled the Italian bike as the sport-naked to have in your garage…that is, if you can afford it.

How did The Beast come to be from its RC8 R roots though? Never fret, KTM has put together a short video, which tells the genesis story of this monster machine.

    I’m glad I just bought a hyperstrada, otherwise I would have got this which would have most likely killed me.

    We’ll done KTM and I apologize I’m too scared to own it.

  2. Bijith Induchoodan says:

    I got one of these beasts in black. The bike is not as violent unless the electronics are switched off. It is a serious fun bike to ride.

    A big thumbs up to KTM for making this happen!

  3. Ian john says:

    I rode it, ton of fun. Its not intimidating at all. Shut up and hang on. Safe with the elecs.
    If it were about 4-5k less I could have pressed the button.
    But thinking the aging fleet of bikes in the market has me waiting for bigger and brighter things possibly.
    Good work KTM for stirring the pot though.

  4. Shawn says:

    I’d like one with half the displacement, at half the price, with the same number of cylinders?

  5. Brian stevens says:

    @Shawn :
    The 690 with just one cylinder is waiting for you… (Half the price, half the displacement, half the motor)

  6. Ian John says:

    @Shawn
    yeah im with you there, just at “half” with all its character would be an epic commuter for me.
    the single cylinder dosnt cut it for me, engine character.

    MT-07 if they were to bring it to OZ, though it dosnt have the looks and snarl of the KTM.

    Side note anyone – does a parallel twin sound the same as a V-twin???

  7. Whip says:

    Yeah, that’s great, KTM, but… HOW MUCH? You’ve been jerking us off for what, 16 months? Fookin’ give up the goods, already.

  8. paulus says:

    This is the bike I lust after… but not at the local RRP
    Unfortunately local import duties (and dealer greed) drive it up over USD 47,000
