BMW Motorrad USA is recalling 11 motorcycle models, for a total of 20,963 units, because the fuel pump, and the auxiliary fuel pump in certain models, may crack and leak fuel during vehicle operation.
The affected models and years are as follows: HP4 (2013-2014), K1300S (2011-2014), K1600GT (2011-2014), K1600GTL (2011-2014), R1200GS (2011-2014), R1200GS Adventure (2011-2014), R1200R (2011-2014), R1200RT (2011-2014), R nineT (2014), S1000R (2014), S1000RR (2011-2014).
At the center of the recall is the fuel pump flange at the location of the quick connector, which when installed, uses a pneumatic fastening tool that could introduce unwanted tolerance during the fastening process.
Over time, cracks could start to form at this location and propagate. Eventually, this could lead to a small leak during operation. After the engine is shut off, the leak will stop. Because the leaking of fuel could lead to a fire, the recall was undertaken.
To remedy the issue, BMW will notify affected owners, and BMW dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge.
