WSBK: Strong Superpole Results in Germany Show the Season Ain’t Over Yet

World Superbike action returns from its summer hiatus, and comes to you this weekend from the Nürburgring in Germany. With Ben Spies only 7 points behind the injured Noriyuki Haga, it appeared the American would take the Championship lead this weekend with little effort, as Haga would not be able to push himself to compete with the Texan. Nitro Nori would appear to have some gas still in his reserves, and has proven thus far that he won’t give up his lead without a fight.

In Superpole 1, it was Johnny Rea who set the fastest time of the session, that was of course until Noriyuki Haga rode onto the asphalt in the latter half of the session. With his commanding ride, Haga sent the clear message that WSBK break had mended the Japanese rider back into his normal rocket self.

Superpole 2 proved to have more variety, as Johnny Rea took the early lead once again. He was quickly passed by Ben Spies, who in turn was surpassed by Haga. Troy Corser entered the fray, and posted the second fastest time of the session on his BMW S1000RR.

Corser wouldn’t be as lucky in Superpole 3 though, where the BMW finished 6th for the day. Early on, it was again Johnny Rea out in front, only to be subplanted by Noriyuki Haga in the final laps of the session. Ben Spies had a bubble during his run, which set him off the pace to catch the rest of the field, he’ll start from the 5th place position tomorrow. Leon Haslam and Michel Fabrizio also posted quick times, with the pair finishing 3rd and 4th respectively.
