The Isle of Man TT — There’s an App for That

05/24/2013 @ 10:50 am, by Jensen Beeler6 COMMENTS

Tomorrow starts the Isle of Man TT — one of the greatest two-wheeled motoring events on this earth. Two weeks of epic motorcycle racing on city streets, if you haven’t been to the TT yet, you really must schedule a trip to meet the Manx. Until you can book those travel plans, we have the next best thing (besides following the TT on A&R, of course): the Isle of Man TT smartphone app.

While the TT app has rider profiles, weather updates, and a constant news stream all for free, we think you will want to spend the £1.49 ($2.25) to get the live-timing and video pass. Complete with a live broadcast from Manx Radio, fans both on the Isle and here back in the US can get a pretty comprehensive TT experience of what is happening on the TT course during race and practice sessions.

You won’t get the wind blast as bikes rocket past you at triple-digit speeds, but this is the next best thing. You can find the Isle of Man TT application in the Apple iTunes store here, and Android users find it in the Google Play store here. 31hrs and counting until the bikes are on the Mountain Course, get excited people.

Been playing with the iOS version for a couple of days now (ever since I saw the announcement on the IoM site). Pretty smooth on an iPhone5 for the most part. Just downloaded the Android version for my Nexus7 tablet. The formatting is a bit off at places, and I’ve had a couple of random force-close/crashes whenever I tap on rider info. Seems I can’t use the same subscription on both my iOS and Android device, so I’ll probably be sticking with the iPhone version.

Why can’t we get any TV coverage?

If you have velocity, you will get tv coverage. It starts on the 2nd. This first few days is newcomers stuff and practice.

They just released an update. Fixed the crashing issue (see also comments in Google Play store). Looks good.

  • Would love to get in on the live video and radio feed action, if only the practice and race times matched up with my waking hours… I will just have to go there myself one year. *sigh*
