The First Photo of the 2013 KTM 1190 Adventure R

With a brochure photo of the 2013 KTM 1190 Adventure leaking yesterday from KTM’s website, today we see more photos of the Austrian brand’s new adventure hitting the interwebs on the ADVrider forums. A studio shot of the 2013 KTM 1190 Adventure R, and two more photos of the base model give us a clearer picture of what KTM will “officially” unveiled at INTERMOT in a few weeks’ time.

The changes between the KTM 1190 Adventure and the KTM 1190 Adventure R are subtle, but the “R” is KTM’s more off-road oriented model between the two. As such, it sports a 21″ wheel up front, and an 18″ wheel in the back. Crash bars, a shorter windscreen, and single-piece saddle complete the changes, though we can expect other non-visible additions like upgraded suspension, etc.

We can expect the 2013 KTM 1190 Adventure R to use the same 147hp 1,195cc v-twin motor as the base model 2013 KTM 1190 Adventure, which is of course a re-tuned version of the KTM 1190 RC8 R superbike motor (possibly our favorite v-twin superbike to ride…sorry Ducati owners). Like the base model, the KTM 1190 Adventure will come with switchable ABS, traction control, adjustable riding modes, and a slipper clutch.

Even full with its 24 liters of fuel (6.3 gallons), the KTM 1190 Adventure R is said to be in the 230kg (507 lbs) range when at the curb, making it a fairly light bike for its displacement, and certainly one of the more powerful. For the new model year in the premium adventure-tourer market., KTM will have to contend with the yet unreleased water-cooled BMW R1200GS replacement, as well as the newly released Ducati Multistrada 1200 S Granturismo.

    “1,1195cc v-twin motor” Man that is one honkin’ big motor! And only 147 HP? What’s up with that?

    147hp is actually not bad. I have a Ducati Multistrada (also a 1200) and it has 150hp. I think the power is quite competitive for a bike of this nature. Now, if it was a Hardley Ableson, it would be 1.8 liters and only have 50 hp. ;-)

    Yes RGR, agrgee. and that’s 147 proper bhp not teensey-weensey ‘merican ones, which are more like Shetland ponies. I test rode the 990Ad only last week and it is a great, great bike but power to weight was slightly lacking. This thing looks very good. Anyone seen a torque curve with numbers?

    RGR, read the cc’s again. It is an obvious typo at “1,1195cc v-twin motor”. That is 12,000 ccs, not 1,200 ccs as is actually the displacement. It was a poke at bad proof-reading. Wow, can’t believe I am the only one to see this.

    DJ yes by george, you’re right! By my poor calculations, assuming standard 69mm stroke, that’s a piston of 454mm!!! Panigale eat your heart out.

    Not crazy about the wheel sizes. Would be nice if there were factory direct options, but then again this thing has a much greater chance of seeing the dirt than a Multistrada.

    @ Damo – the 21″ front and 19″ rear on the “R” are perfect for the real dirt. The standard model are better “street-baised” sizes, yet still allow from some casual dirt use.

    I think KTM is figthing Triumph for the “biggest ugliest ever muffler slapped on an adventure bike” Award.

    This things are getting out of hand. I much rather have the undertail original setup.

    I hope they drop this 1200cc Ape on a refreshed SM-T with all the farkles of the new Adventure, some decent hard bags and be able to give a good figth to the Multi and a share of it’s market.

    It is obvious that KTM copied from other manufacturers to build the new 1200 Adventure with a result to lose their unique identity. No comparison with the real adventure looks as the 990 Adventure R.

    For the new Adventure, KTM should seriously consider to install the attractive under tail double muffler of the 990 and covering the middle sides of the bike which looks naked and the suspension spring exposed. Only these couple changes can make the new Adventure to belong more in to KTM family. Sorry KTM but I am a big supporter of your product and want to see better esthetics for your new Adventure.
