Video: Josh Brookes Shows Us the Fastest Line over “The Mountain” at Cadwell Park

The Mountain at Cadwell Park, as it is known, is like the British version of the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca: another one of those special points on a race track, that would not exist on the computer-generated courses we see today. Famous for lofting bikes into the air, The Mountain makes for spectacular photographs, and should be on every rider’s track day bucket list. Finding the fastest racing line over The Mountain can be difficult though, as riders have to contend with keeping the front of their motorcycles down, but such is not the case for HM Plant Honda’s Josh Brookes…

Lost Knee Puck Hinders Hayden at Indy

Track conditions were the talk of the paddock this weekend at the Indianapolis GP, as riders battled the changing tarmac surfaces, and undulating bumps of the Indy infield. Perhaps most vocal of his displeasure with the course was Ducati rider Casey Stoner, who called the Indianapolis Motor Speedway not a world class track, and specifically complained about plastic drains that would catch riders as the ventured in towards the edge of the track (Rossi also complained of these drains). Teammate Nicky Hayden was less critical before Sunday’s race though, saying that Stoner’s comments could be applied to many of the courses on the MotoGP calendar. However after losing a knee puck to one of the drainage grates that Stoner criticized earlier, Hayden may be re-thinking his tune.

Rossi Waiting to Hear if Burgess Will Retire

Talking after the Indianapolis GP, Valentino Rossi explained that he is waiting to hear from Jeremy Burgess as to whether the Australian Crew Chief will retire next season. Assured of the fact that Burgess would not stay behind at Yamaha, and would not work with another rider, Rossi stated the buzz around whether Burgess would move with the Italian to Ducati, hinges as to when Burgess plans on retiring from motorcycle racing.

Nicky Hayden Renews Contract with Ducati

Under the lights of the Indy Mile, where motorcycle racing began for the Kentucky-born MotoGP racer, Nicky Hayden has signed a two-year contract with Ducati Corse for the 2011 & 2012 seasons. Not the biggest surprise in the paddock, Hayden’s contract renewal has never really been questioned this season as the American started the season off with series of strong finishes and continues to be a strong brand ambassador for Ducati in the United States. Hayden will be joined the next two years by former teammate Valentino Rossi, the pair rode for Repsol Honda in 2003, with Hayden finishing the season 5th in his rookie GP season.

World Superbike Responds to Ducati Exodus

Infront Motor Sports, rights holder to the World Superbike Championship series, has responded to the news that Ducati Corse will be leaving the series in 2011. Responding with an official press release, IMS’s message essentially boils down to poking holes in Ducati’s statement about technical regulations. Stating that the 2009 season was dominated by the Ducati 1198 Superbike, sans one Ben Spies, the Italian firm has clearly been able to be competitive with the current formula. IMS goes on to basically say that WSBK is about more than one manufacturer, and can’t cater to Ducati’s whims even if they do have a lengthy history together.

Ben Spies to Factory Yamaha Team

As expected, Ben Spies and Yamaha have announced that the current World Superbike Champion and MotoGP rookie will move up to the factory Yamaha team (noticeably not called Fiat-Yamaha in the press release) for the 2011 season. Spies’ move to the factory squad has lovingly been referred to as the “second worst-kept secret in MotoGP,” right after Rossi’s departure from the Fiat-Yamaha team to Ducati Corse.

Colin Edwards – “I’m going fishing. Screw this sh*t.”

No one makes the MotoGP media center come alive with emotion more so than Colin Edwards. A veteran of the sport, and born with no filter between his brain and mouth, the Texan Tornado captured the spotlight during the pre-race press conference at the Red Bull Indianapolis GP. A stark contrast to the polished veneers of other riders, Edwards isn’t afraid to tell things the way he sees it, even if it involves some colorful language. To get an idea of what we mean, check out a portion of the press conference transcript after the jump.

Ducati Trademarks “Diavel” Name in the UK

Ducati has recieved a trademark with the UK Intellectual Property Office for the Bolognese word for devil, or “Diavel”, which according to MCN is to be the name of the company’s new performance cruiser (shown here in a render done by Bar-Design exclusively for Asphalt & Rubber). Interestingly enough, Ducati has not trademarked the Diavel name with the United States Patent & Trademarks Office (USPTO). However with the British government, Ducati has reserved the Diavel mark for virtually every use possible, including lifestyle items like shirts, perfume, watches, and our personal favorite: skin cleansing lotions and creams.

Casey Stoner Ducati 1198S Phillip Island Replica

Missing three races because of a mystery illness, Casey Stoner put any critics he had from his sudden departure in 2009 to bed with his masterful race at Phillip Island. Racing in front of his home crowd, Stoner slid around the Australian course to a decisive victory, in what we called one of the top races of 2009. Making the moment even more special for Australian fans, and Ducatisti alike, was the special race livery that Stoner ran for his home race. Hoping to commemorate that race and Stoner’s contributions to the Marlboro Ducati team (Stoner is leaving Ducati for HRC next year), a French Ducati dealership in Moulins-lès-Metz has decided to sell a limited number of Casey Stoner Ducati 1198S Phillip Island replicas.

Norton Returning to MotoGP Racing

German magazine Speedweek is reporting that Norton will be back in GP racing for the 2012 season with a two-man team. Speedweek’s highly respected Austrian journalist Gunther Wiesinger has received word that Norton has requested two spots on the 2012 MotoGP grid, and has signed a request to join the series when it returns to the 1000cc format. It’s unclear at this time if Norton will be entering as a claiming rule team (CRT), or be listed as a factory prototype, which could have a dramatic affect on the team’s success in the series.

Valentino Rossi Signs Two Year Contract with Ducati Valentino Rossi signs Ducati MotoGP 560x418

UPDATE 3: Ducati has officially announced signing Valentino Rossi.

UPDATE 2: Ducati Motor Holdings CEO Gabriele del Torchio has confirmed that Valentino Rossi will race with Ducati in 2011.

UPDATE: Ducati & Yamaha have made a gentlemen’s agreement to delay the announcement of Rossi’s move until after Laguna Seca, in exchange for letting the Italian test the Desmosedici GP10 at the Valencian Round.

Let’s avoid the the “scoops”, “exclusives”, and “OMG’s”, and just say that Asphalt & Rubber has received word from a trusted source that Valentino Rossi has signed a two-year agreement with Ducati, that’s set to be announced on Monday…and boom goes the dynamite (sorry, we couldn’t resist). The Rossi/Ducati fantasy has been put forth for years, with the fervor on the subject reaching its pinnacle this season, as Ducati reportedly wafted a €15 million salary (almost double Yamaha’s offer) in front of the nine-time World Champion.

Likely less to do with money, and more about prestige and priority, the announcement comes on the heels of Casey Stoner’s exodus from the Ducati team, as the Australian has jumped ship back to HRC, in what is to be some sort of multinational threesome with energy drinks involved. Ok Italy, it’s almost time to change the sheets, this wet dream is nearly a reality. Stay tuned for Monday.

Despite saying that he would like to end his career with Yamaha, Rossi has increasingly been linked to Ducati lately because of tensions with Jorge Lorenzo. While Rossi was reportedly in favor of taking a salary reduction at Fiat-Yamaha (€14 million reduced to €9 million), the Italian did not like the notion that the use of funds would go to doubling Lorenzo’s pay check, which was just a million euros short of Rossi’s.

With Lorenzo rivaling Rossi not only on the track (the Yamaha Duo were virtually untouchable last season, and Lorenzo has run away with the 2010 Championship now with Rossi injured), but also for priority in the Fiat-Yamaha team box, we can presume egos collided. Assured the top-billing at Ducati, and with the added attention/sponsorship that an Italian rider on an Italian made motorcycle brings, Rossi seems set to end his career on a Ducati….which is sort of how it should be when you think about it.

The egg timer is now set as we wait for an announcement from Yamaha about Rossi’s replacement. Smart money is on Ben Spies…Wataru Yoshikawa being the long-shot on that bet.

  1. Ken C. says:

This is like LeBron going to Miami, except without all the people in Cleveland having a cow. Hopefully Ducati can deliver a bike that he can do something with.

  2. wayne says:

I wonder if Yamaha really will bump up Spies. That seems to be the current conjecture and as much as I would like to see him on a factory ride, I’m just not sold yet. Of course the obvious question is: if not Ben, who?

  3. Ken K says:

Wow, even though i knew it was coming, its still crazy. ALthough Im not THAT excited for some reason. I hope this doesnt screw over hayden with all the attention going to Rossi.

EIther way, Speeeezz is one step closer to planting himself on a factory bike.

  4. emd says:

    Awesome, awesomer, awesomness….. fck yeah

  5. BikePilot says:

Just Perfect. I wish Mr. Rossi a speedy recovery and an even more speedy time on the track :)

  6. Eric says:

It will be interesting to see him on a Ducati, that’s for sure. I bet the italian fans can hardly contain themselves. It might be like his 2006 season all over. Basically the only reason he lost to Hayden that year is because the Yamaha was such a stinker. He might be in the same boat with Ducati next year.

  7. Peter says:

Now Burgess has to move to Ducati as well for the stars to align….

  8. Trent says:

It will be great for Ducati to get some Rossi/Burgess bike development going on. Hopefully they can fix the GP11 like he fixed the M1 back in 2003, and some of that goodness will trickle down to us Ducatisti. My only worry is for Rossi’s legacy. It looks like he’s going to be facing some stiff competition from Spies and Lorenzo next year. At least they’ll all be on new bikes, with the rule change back to 1000ccs. This year’s factory M1 is too good to beat.

  9. Ton3tal says:

I think It’s nice to see ben spies as Rossi team mate on Ducati factory team…..I hope so

  10. Jake Fox says:

This makes me very happy. Now my two favorite riders, Hayden and Rossi, are with my favorite manufacturer. Nice and simple.

  11. irksome says:

The even bigger story is that he seems to have changed his name to Tim.

Tim Rossi. You heard it here first.

  12. While we wait for the inevitable announcement which will really pit some much needed excitement back into MotoGP, here are some if the reasons why Rossi will make the change in my opinion http://www.ducatinewstoday.com/2009/09/why-valentino-rossi-will-finish-his-career-on-a-ducati-part-i/

  13. Patrick B says:

This is great racing period. Rossi had alot to do with the development of the M1 from 2004 until now. Ducati was courting him then, but had the notion that the rider doesn’t make the bike, our engineers do. I wonder if their tone has changed 6 years later with everyone who’s struggled on the GP Desmo. Nothing against Lorenzo or Spies, but everyone is FAST on the Yamaha. It’s the best bike on the grid thanks to Vale, Jeremy, and the guru’s in Japan. Ben is sure to get the factory ride next year and desrving enough. It’s also great for Dorna who needs the top two riders in the sport to be on different machinery for sponserships, endorsements, etc. Go Rossi!

  14. Smith says:

Rossi still number one in Ducati, I’m sure that.

  15. MTGR says:

    Shock, surprise, blah blah.

Was there ever any doubt this would happen? Why else would Stoner pack his bags? Rossi turning down big money and the chance to call all the shots again as the only alien on a team?

  16. Sven says:

Rossi is a traitor if he goes to Ducati.
I won’t be rooting for him anymore.
Spies on the factory bike. That’d be great.

  17. Steve D says:

How is Rossi a traitor?? I can see this statment if had only ever ridden for Yamaha. Did you forget his Honda years? If anything he has only been a traitor for not being on Ducati and bleeding his “red” Italian blood all these years.

  18. Jake Fox says:

Yamaha asked Rossi to take a big pay cut for the financial solvency of the team and then offered Lorenzo a substantial pay hike. With friends like that, who needs enemies?

  19. Millard D says:

I agree with Jake Fox: Jake Fox says:

This makes me very happy. Now my two favorite riders, Hayden and Rossi, are with my favorite manufacturer. Nice and simple.

  20. Daniel says:

Stoners crew has been asked to seek new employment for next season. This again would suggest that Rossi is bringing his crew along as well. No doubt Ducati will be very successful next year, and Rossi will only help the development for Nicky. Would do the sport good as well, bit of a shake up! Yamaha we’re a bit silly to cut Rossi’s wage and increase Lorenzo’s. Its also becuase Fuwizara is leaving Yamaha as well I believe. Go Rossi in Red.

  21. Brian says:

IF Rossi leaves Yamaha, Burges will have to go with him, I think Rossi’s Loyalty is with Yamaha, and would prefer to see him stay on the Yamaha and see the real battle, If Rossi goes to Ducati it would be amazing also! I think that if he does leave Yamaha, they should sign Edwards, as I feel he is stonger than spies and needs the recogintion for his consistency.

Either Way, Rossi is the Doctor so what ever medicine he perscribes will do the trick!
    Forza Italia!

  22. Mat says:

Rossi on a Duke! Fantastic! Of course Burgess will follow him, he said it the other day.

    Q. If rossi leaves will you stay?

Burgess. I go where my rider goes.

    Simples!

He will be great on a Ducati, I don’t think he’s capable of being anything else!!!

Should inject a bit of life back too, Speez on a Factory Yam, Stoner on HRC’s finest and the Doctor on the red devil!!!

    C’mon 2011!!!

  23. Clayton says:

I think it is going to be hard for rossi to jump on the duke and be competitive straight out the box.
It will be amazing if he reproduces his performance, like when he jumped on the yammie and won the 1st race, but this time the competition especifically lorenzo is going from strength to strength, and I think Rossi will find it hard to beat it in the remaining races this year!!!

  24. Of course Ducati will give Rossi the fastest anf most aggressive GP Bike ever… They should give what Rossi expect and We know that they will. With that, No one! I said No one can beat rossi from now on… GO IDOL…

  26. Jim says:

About time – so this is how it goes – in 2011 Vale kicks ass and keeps his crown or gets it back from Jorge. Then he retires from two wheels and gets in the F-1 car and kicks Alonso’s ass, and places in the top five for the year 2012. Its gonna happen…………
I will love it when Alonso gets humiliated by Rossi………
Can’t wait to see the number 46 next to the prancing horse……

  27. Graeme says:

2011 will be an interesting year for sure. I hope Rossi, Hayden and Spies all kick Lorenzo’s ass and that Yamaha go backwards so they realize how valuable Rossi was in keeping them competitive. As far as Rossi being a traitor, it seems to me Yamaha betrayed him.

  28. yamaha t135 says:

it will be a very big loss for us yamaha fanatics if rossi leaves yamaha for ducati.
if thats the case then ducati should consider building ducati scooters and underbones too!

  29. valemania says:

i agree with Graeme, its not vale who betrayed Yamaha, but its yamaha that betrayed him.its seems that yamaha has forgoten the day when their bike was nothing.they choose to double lorenzo’s salary while they reduce vale’s salary almost half of current salary.what an idea.go vale…!!! no one can beat you now on the beast

  30. moin's says:

i hope very bad day comes to yamaha.bcz lorenzo izz not rossi.I think it is going to be hard for rossi to jump on the duke and be competitive straight out the box.

Rossi = Hayden… whatta lovely reunion… hope they will have a great years with Ducati, like what they had with Honda Repsol Team… BRAVO

  40. Millard D says:

    What Black Rose said . . . Rossi and Hayden reunited . . . and on Ducati . . . YEAH!!!

  41. Graeme says:

Don’t realy care about the Ducati side of it (don’t see how the bike is a prototype when you can go buy one if you have the coin). But I do hope that there is no seperation between the Rossis and Haydens garage and that they both kick Yamahas and Lorenzos ass. Hope Spies gives him a hurray up also. Wouldn’t mind seeing Rossi, Hatden and Spies on the podium.
As for Stoner, well I lost any respect I had for him when he acted like a spoilt kid after being out riden by Rossi at the 2008 Laguna Seca.

  42. toni says:

italian rider on italian bike, nice quote… goooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

  43. crackhelmet says:
