A Close Call at the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Racing for third place, Honda National Motos wass rushing to fill their CBR1000RR when all of a sudden gallons of race fuel come out of the refueling hose, and slathered the bike in flammable liquid. What happens next is completely predictable to even the most casual race enthusiast.

Likely hitting the super-heated header pipes, the fuel ignites while crew members with minimal fire protection are crowded around the motorcycle trying to dry it with mechanic’s rags. Luckily it would appear no one was injured, but check the video out after the jump to see how close this could have been to a real disaster.

There’s something you won’t be seeing at the TTXGP.

@Brammofan nope, you’ll just see a puff of smoke and everyone touching the bike drop dead ;)

sadly, I’ve had experience with exploding batteries. Its def. not unheard of. I even have a friend who now has reduced vision because of one. Whats funny is that it cleared up his acne when nothing else seemed to work.

My bet is that the team refrigerated the fuel prior to fill up and the valve malfunc-ed exposed to the low temps. Teams will do anything to get that little bit of advantage.

Bloody shame we can’t get that LeMan 24 hour coverage here in the U.S. That’s a great race. Maybe someday somebody will start up a motorsports network here…oh wait…
