Billed as the toughest single-day enduro in the world, the Erzbergrodeo certainly seems to live up to the hyperbole. Four days of events, the Erzbergrodeo is crowned by the last day’s Red Bull Hare Scramble, where 500 qualifiers (pared down from over 1,000 entries) take to the Austrian quarry, and only a handful find the finish line.

The Erzbergrodeo is mildly ridiculous, and completely laborious…so, obviously we like it. Thankfully for the 2014 competitors, the rain wasn’t too big of a factor this year…because you know, it’s not like the hare scramble wasn’t hard enough to begin with. We won’t spoil the results for you, so a summary video (along with a bunch of hi-res photos) is waiting for you after the jump, while you can watch the 4hr long version right here.

Wow, that jump around 2:20. And its really interesting to me that this kinda of dirt riding is so big in UK but doesn’t seem to be big at all in the US. Is this correct? If so, why?

  2. TheSeaward says:

We (the US) don’t get these big, flashy “hard enduro” events, but enduro racing and hare scrambles are alive and well in the US. It doesn’t get the publicity or TV time of MX or SX, but there are lots of grassroots race series and some successful national/professional series. American road racing is in shambles, but I think the state of our offroad series is very strong. We took a huge hit with the loss of Kurt Caselli as he was pretty much the face of American enduro and endurance racing. I’m sure someone here can speak more intelligently on the matter than myself as I really only know what I pick up from my dad who has been riding enduros for 45+ years now and bleeds premix.

  3. blunderbus says:

Seaward is correct. I’m the 45+ hare scramble guy that probably races with his dad on any given sunday. absolutely NO publicity, but the ranks of such groups like FTR (Florida Trail Riders) are literally bursting at the seams.

on thursday, its just a field out in the middle of nowhere. but sunday morning, there are almost 1000 six figure+ RVs parked side by side, and god-knows how many tents, vans and pickup trucks supporting any given event.

and no one has a clue. back before ww2, Japan called the US a “sleeping giant.” I think the direction of the motorcycle industry for the next decade or so is subtly being shaped by this growing and quiet majority.

  4. Off-road racing is alive and well in the US. It doesn’t get the coverage that Supercross receives, but bike sales tell a different story.

  5. Spamtasticus says:

Here in Florida we have a series called Florida Trail Riders (FTR) that has about 4000 competitors in Hare Scrambles, MX and Enduros and it is only regional. The scrambles are the most popular events. So, yes, offroad is rather big in the US.

  6. Spamtasticus says:

I have raced FTR scrambles that have 700 + bikes racing in one weekend and there are 14 races per year.

  7. Tony says:

There are a few “Hard Enduros” here in the states. The Tennessee Knockout(home race for me) and King of the Motos out in California. We used to have the Last Man Standing in Texas which was a Red Bull sponsored event. One year(I think), only 2 guys finished it, David Knight and one other Brit enduro rider, forgot his name. But there’s also Endurocross which seems to be getting more attention these days. I’d rather watch Endurocross than MX or SX any day personally. There’s also the National Enduro and GNCC races that have decent crowds show up, but it’s really hard to shoot that kind of stuff for television when it lasts all day or 3hrs respectively.

    Remarkable photography!
