MV Agusta F3 800 Ago Now Officially Debuts

We already announced the bike last November, and brought you a bevy of hi-res images of the special edition machine. Although now that we think of it, MV Agusta never released anything on this Giacomo Agostini tribute motorcycle — better late than never, right? Back at the EICMA show launch, where the MV Agusta F3 800 Ago was first shown to the public (and Agostini himself), the Varese brand promised us two additional motorcycle launches in early 2014. MV Agsuta made good on half that promise with the Dragster 800 model, hopefully this Ago special edition isn’t the other half of that statement, and MV Agusta still has something waiting in the wings. That being said, the Tricolore & Gold paint scheme is gorgeous, and looks even better in person.

Isle of Man TT Gets TV Deal for Australia & USA

Want to watch the Isle of Man TT from the comfort of your non-British TV, but haven’t been able to in the past? A new TV from the Isle of Man’s Department of Economic Development will do just that. Inking a new TV contract with North One TV, the Isle of Man TT will be televised in the American, Australian, and of course British markets, making it easier than ever to watch the iconic road race. With a five-year contract with the Velocity Channel in the US, the American cable channel will show seven one-hour race shows. Each segment will air within 24hrs of each race, and be tailored for the American market.

Castiglioni Denies Fiat Buyout of MV Agusta Is in the Works

After reporting 22% growth in Q1 2014, Giovanni Castiglioni had some closing words about the rumors that Fiat could acquire MV Agusta — a popular rumor that has been swirling around in the press the last two months. Denying outright that MV Agusta had, or was in, talks with the Fiat-Chrysler group about an acquisition (some reports linked even MV Agusta to being bought by Fiat-owned Ferrari), Castiglioni said the Italian company solely was focused on building growth, and building motorcycles. “Moreover, I’d like to take this opportunity to deny rumours circulated by the media over the last few days concerning supposed negotiations vis-à-vis the sale of a share of MV Agusta to the Fiat-Chrysler Group,” said Giovanni Castiglioni, the President and CEO of MV Agusta.

A 2WD Hybrid-Electric Motorcycle for the US Military?

In the coming years, US special forces may be riding a tw0-wheel drive, hybrid-electric, multi-fuel motorcycle co-developed by BRD Motorcycles and Logos Technologies. Helping make this project possible is a Small Business Innovation Research grant from DARPA. The goal is to make a single-track vehicle for US expeditionary and special forces that will be nearly silent in operation, yet also capable of traveling long distances. Details on the proposed machine are light, of course, but it sounds like the 2WD dirt bike will be based off the BRD RedShift MX (shown above), and use an electric drivetrain, as well as a multi-fuel internal combustion engine to achieve its goals.

Colin Edwards Will Retire from Racing after 2014 Season

Announcing his decision during the pre-event press conference for the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, Colin Edwards told the assembled press that 2014 would be the Texan’s last season racing a motorcycle. Citing a lack of improvement on his performance in pre-season testing and at the Qatar GP, Edwards decision perhaps answers the lingering question in the paddock of when the American rider would hang-up his spurs after an illustrious career in AMA, WSBK and MotoGP. Talking about his inability to come to terms with the Forward Yamaha, which Aleix Espargaro was able to take to the front of the pack in Qatar, Edwards was at a loss when it came to understanding the Open Class machine and his lack of results.

MSF Updates Its Basic RiderCourse Curriculum

It is no surprise that statistics from the NHTSA show that motorcycle accidents and injuries are on the rise. According to the 2012 Motor Vehicle Crash report published by the NHTSA, motorcycle fatalities for that year rose to 4,957, up seven percent from 2011, while injuries increased 15% to 93,000. While the NHTSA statistics are misleading because the motorcycle category includes mopeds, scooters, three-wheelers, pocket bikes, mini bikes, and off-road vehicles, new riders need every advantage they can afford. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has taken notice of these statistics and has revised the curriculum for its Basic RiderCourse to include a new Basic eCourse, which students will take prior to in-person instruction.

Yamaha Trademarks “R1S” & “R1M” at USPTO – “YZF-R1M” Trademarked Abroad – But Why?

Are new Yamaha YZF-R1 models coming down the pipe? That’s the question being asked after trademark filings in the US and abroad tipped off Yamaha Motor’s intention to use “R1S”, “R1M”, and “YZF-R1M” for motorcycle, scooter, and three-wheeled purposes. The filings are being taken as hints towards a possible multiple trim levels of the Yamaha YZF-R1 superbike, with the “S” and “M” designations being different spec machines than the current base model. The “S” nomenclature is a popular one in the two and four-wheeled world, though “M” would certainly be a novel designation, outside of say…BMW.

Bell & COTA Create Texas-Themed Limited-Edition Helmet

Continuing its theme of making limited-edition helmets for premier-class US rounds, Bell Helmets has teamed up with the Circuit of the Americas and Chris Wood, of Airtrix, to create a Texas-themed Bell Star Carbon helmet, just in time for COTA’s MotoGP race next weekend. Available only until April 13th, the Bell/COTA helmet features a red, white, and blue flag motif on the front, with both the American and State of Texas flags visible, which then wrap around the rear to merge with a hardwood design, reminiscent of the floorboards in a Western saloon. The helmet is also crowned with a Longhorn cattle skull, which adds to the Texan motif. The specially designed helmet also features a horseshoe, the COTA logo, and the 2014 Red Bull MotoGP of The Americas logo.

Aprilia Mounting a Return to MotoGP in 2016

Towards the end of the 800cc era, MotoGP looked to be in dire condition. Grids were dwindling, factories were reducing their participation, and teams were in difficult financial straits indeed. By the end of 2011, there were just 17 full time entries, Suzuki was down to a single rider, and were about to pull out entirely for 2012. How different the situation looks today. In a recent interview with the official website, Aprilia Corse’s new boss Romano Albesiano gave a brief outline of their plans. The Italian factory will continue to work with the IODA Racing team for 2014 to collect data on the electronics and tires, which they will use as input on an entirely new project being worked on for 2016.

This Is Pretty Much What the Monster 800 Will Look Like

With the advent of the Ducati Monster 1200, it was only a matter of time before Ducati’s middleweight liquid-cooled “Monster 800″ would be spotted, and unsurprisingly the machines have a great deal in common. The one big difference seems to be that the 821cc Monster gets a double-sided swingarm, which has become Ducati’s new way of differentiating between its big and medium displacement models of the same machine, see entry for Ducati 899 Panigale. With the spied Ducati Monster 800 looking ready for primetime, and a pre-fall launch isn’t out of the question. Giving us an excellent glimpse into what the Ducati Monster 800 would look like, Luca Bar has again used his Photoshop skills to render up images of the still unreleased “baby” Monster.

Love it or hate it, Yamaha’s “Race Blu” livery is back for a bevy for Yamaha’s 2014 models, including the 2014 Yamaha YZF-R1 and 2014 Yamaha YZF-R6. Debuting in Silverstone during the British GP, the special livery is supposedly based off the colors that the factory Yamaha Racing team uses in MotoGP, except for the minor detail that the special color scheme really looks nothing like the livery currently found on Lorenzo or Rossi’s Yamaha YZR-M1 race bikes (expect a livery change in Misano, perhaps?).

That being said, it is an attractive design with its matte black and shiny blue paint, and the Race Blu livery should help sell a few more units for Yamaha, as we have gotten word that the R1 and R6 will go without a refresh for the upcoming model year…again. Last year the Race Blu painted bikes stayed in Europe, and we expect the same for this year as well. Sigh…maybe 2015 will have some surprises in the sport bike category from the tuning fork brand.

    Don’t get me wrong i still think the yamaha R6 and the R1 are still the best looking bikes and those bikes looks stunning in my eyes but c’mon Honda and Yamaha 2008 and 2009????? Yamaha isn’t in sbk and rea said: Honda doesn”t help!!! both massive factory’s but still nothing

  5. Um, that’s hideous. It kills me how ugly the R1 has become after the beauty of the 2006 Yellow/black colour scheme. And yes I run a ducati biased Web site but I owned said 50th Anniversary R1 and loved it.

    I like the r6..the R1 would look better if they reversed the black and blue…right now it has too much black not enough blue.
    I feel ya on the Honda, Ive had three 08s and now a 2012…the bike is much better now so many small improvements over the model run that the 12/13 are very well put together now…it’s like a totaly different bike to the 08…even the 600 is vastly improved over such a long model run.but still both are due for some big changes soon.
    The hope is the v4 superbike will be here next year and it may have all the goodies…the thing about honda is there allways the last to come on with new stuff like traction controll but when they do it wll be the best system out there.

    Is Yamaha owned by Harley now? I’m not being fooled by this farce. Kawasaki is the only JP bike that is actually designing bikes. New paint does not make a new bike. The MSRP should be cheaper since you’re buying a repainted 2009 (almost 5 years old) bike. I guess it’s either the new KTM 1250 Super Duke of a new ZX-10R. Thinking about a BMW S1000RR as well.

    Maybe I’m now just too jaded and cannot grasp the beauty of what now is….but I just haven’t seen a monumental shift in design and engineering in motorcycles during the past 10 years (2003-2013) that one saw in the previous 10 years (1993-2003). This bike looks like it could be ANY year Yamaha. Its not ugly, its just so conventional.

    I usually think that the audience here at Asphalt&Rubber complains too much, but I have to agree with you here.

    Yamaha should come up with new R models sooner rather than later.

    And in Honda’s defense, at least they enhanced their ’08 Fireblade.

When it comes to the Japanese manufacturers, it’s always better to buy the later generation iterations as opposed to the first second or even third generation, because one of the things that the Japanese are really good at is perfecting a model. While there may be no major changes, or even visible changes to a motorcycle that have been producing for five years, rest assured that they’ve made improvements to each model, improvements that matter to performance, handling, comfort, maintenance and part longevity. As a general rule I would say it’s best to buy the fourth or fifth generation, or the second to last generation in a line. That is usually the best possible bike they can build.

    And for the record, Yamaha is one of those companies that likes to get it right the first time out, and can anyone seriously argue that they didn’t do that with the very first R1 (1998)? Anyone? I didn’t think so. Hard to improve upon a bike that was better than anything else anyone was building by a significant margin back then, but they certainly have through each generation. I have no doubt that the next R1 & R6 will be a significant step forward across the board, and Yamaha’s not going to put them in the hands of the public until they are as close to perfect as they can possibly be.

    Yamaha is not Honda, they think differently and they have a different way of doing things, and I appreciate that. Those who don’t understand the Japanese and think that all Japanese bikes are the same… well you kids have allowed yourself to be sucked into a world of carefully constructed manipulative marketing and brand loyalty brainwashing. You just keep riding your German and Italian bikes, and keep getting smoked by little squirts on worked Yamahas, Yamahas that need nothing more than an oil change every 3000 miles and a valvetrain check every 26,000 miles.

    Oh how amusing. Perhaps the Japanese manufacturers have finally run out of “iterations”
    They will now have to think of something new. So Honda will do a V4. Suzuki a GSXR 1100, Yamaha, bikes in blue and black (to reflect their race bikes which are blue, black, and WHITE). Kawasaki a ZX 6.5RR.

    Everyone complains about Ducati but at least they bring out a new bike once in a while.

    Aprilia, KTM, Triumph, Ducati, MV Agusta, Buell, Norton, Aprilia, BMW, Ga Gas……..why would you want a Japanese bike again?

    That thing looks just… old and fat. Meh. Still the same thing, and it was not that great to begin with. The R1 has become the pig of the liter bike class – it is the least powerful, the worst handling and at this point the lowest spec, even compared to the other Japanese bikes. It is positively quaint compared to European offerings and yet it is still priced in the same ballpark.

    I own a 2009 r1 and i hated it till i got the ECU flashed, Now the bike is just crazy fast!!!! friends can’t beleave how fast it is they are like what did you do to that. Get you r1 ECU flashed. Now Dam yamaha get us a new bike with 205 or 210 hp lightn it up and lets start see some real power. If not by 2015 i done with ya, going with bmw you also you get a 3 year warrantie. Jap bike only 1 year? Come on guys get with the program yamaha!!!!!

    Because all the Euro bikes I’ve owned have spent more time with my mechanics than with me. Sure, they’ve gotten slightly better these days. I own a 2009 Speed Triple currently. Fun to ride, but in terms of build, finish and reliability, it’s not even good enough to lick the toes of the 2006 GSX-R 750 I had before it…. and Suzuki aren’t even that highly regarded compared to Yamaha or Honda.

    I’ve decided that my next bike will definitely be Japanese. I don’t believe in terms like “character” and “soul” in a motorcycle anyway. Soul should come from the person riding them, and character from roads they’re ridden on. You can keep your soul. My soulless self just wants to ride without things rattling under me.

    Jeez, what have the Asian liter bikes come too? None of them are really that appealing at all. Yamaha, what are yout thinking? The R1 is gross! Totally went the wrong direction after the 2008 models. Yamaha would have better luck making a 1000cc version of the R6. Better yet, a v4. That would put the R1 back on top, which are currently being owned by the European manufacturers, BMW, Aprilia & Ducati.

    I’m positive it will be going on a gruesome diet for MY2015, fully decked with all the latest electronic doodas and gizmos augmented by the “almost sure thing” boost in a HP. I highly doubt they will drop the I4 and their CrossPlane (SBC Crank) for something else . . . even for the highly glorified and rumored I3.

    You can’t really blame Yamaha for not updating the R1 just yet. I imagine it would be just about impossible to match the BMW or Panigale for a lower price point and all the other Japanese liter bikes are gathering dust in dealer showrooms, so why not focus your resources on bikes like the FZ-09 or competing with Honda’s new 500cc machines instead of wasting it on a bike that won’t sell in high volume in the first place? The R1 does it’s job of being a flag-ship bike by winning races and establishing the relationship with the M1. Mission accomplished.

    A little disappointing. I have had a 2006, two 2007′s, and I have the 2013. In my opinion the ’13 in matte grey is still the best as far as color options go.. Can’t say ill be purchasing anything 2014. Maybe next year.
