A 2WD Hybrid-Electric Motorcycle for the US Military?

In the coming years, US special forces may be riding a tw0-wheel drive, hybrid-electric, multi-fuel motorcycle co-developed by BRD Motorcycles and Logos Technologies. Helping make this project possible is a Small Business Innovation Research grant from DARPA. The goal is to make a single-track vehicle for US expeditionary and special forces that will be nearly silent in operation, yet also capable of traveling long distances. Details on the proposed machine are light, of course, but it sounds like the 2WD dirt bike will be based off the BRD RedShift MX (shown above), and use an electric drivetrain, as well as a multi-fuel internal combustion engine to achieve its goals.

Colin Edwards Will Retire from Racing after 2014 Season

Announcing his decision during the pre-event press conference for the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, Colin Edwards told the assembled press that 2014 would be the Texan’s last season racing a motorcycle. Citing a lack of improvement on his performance in pre-season testing and at the Qatar GP, Edwards decision perhaps answers the lingering question in the paddock of when the American rider would hang-up his spurs after an illustrious career in AMA, WSBK and MotoGP. Talking about his inability to come to terms with the Forward Yamaha, which Aleix Espargaro was able to take to the front of the pack in Qatar, Edwards was at a loss when it came to understanding the Open Class machine and his lack of results.

MSF Updates Its Basic RiderCourse Curriculum

It is no surprise that statistics from the NHTSA show that motorcycle accidents and injuries are on the rise. According to the 2012 Motor Vehicle Crash report published by the NHTSA, motorcycle fatalities for that year rose to 4,957, up seven percent from 2011, while injuries increased 15% to 93,000. While the NHTSA statistics are misleading because the motorcycle category includes mopeds, scooters, three-wheelers, pocket bikes, mini bikes, and off-road vehicles, new riders need every advantage they can afford. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has taken notice of these statistics and has revised the curriculum for its Basic RiderCourse to include a new Basic eCourse, which students will take prior to in-person instruction.

Yamaha Trademarks “R1S” & “R1M” at USPTO – “YZF-R1M” Trademarked Abroad – But Why?

Are new Yamaha YZF-R1 models coming down the pipe? That’s the question being asked after trademark filings in the US and abroad tipped off Yamaha Motor’s intention to use “R1S”, “R1M”, and “YZF-R1M” for motorcycle, scooter, and three-wheeled purposes. The filings are being taken as hints towards a possible multiple trim levels of the Yamaha YZF-R1 superbike, with the “S” and “M” designations being different spec machines than the current base model. The “S” nomenclature is a popular one in the two and four-wheeled world, though “M” would certainly be a novel designation, outside of say…BMW.

Bell & COTA Create Texas-Themed Limited-Edition Helmet

Continuing its theme of making limited-edition helmets for premier-class US rounds, Bell Helmets has teamed up with the Circuit of the Americas and Chris Wood, of Airtrix, to create a Texas-themed Bell Star Carbon helmet, just in time for COTA’s MotoGP race next weekend. Available only until April 13th, the Bell/COTA helmet features a red, white, and blue flag motif on the front, with both the American and State of Texas flags visible, which then wrap around the rear to merge with a hardwood design, reminiscent of the floorboards in a Western saloon. The helmet is also crowned with a Longhorn cattle skull, which adds to the Texan motif. The specially designed helmet also features a horseshoe, the COTA logo, and the 2014 Red Bull MotoGP of The Americas logo.

Aprilia Mounting a Return to MotoGP in 2016

Towards the end of the 800cc era, MotoGP looked to be in dire condition. Grids were dwindling, factories were reducing their participation, and teams were in difficult financial straits indeed. By the end of 2011, there were just 17 full time entries, Suzuki was down to a single rider, and were about to pull out entirely for 2012. How different the situation looks today. In a recent interview with the official website, Aprilia Corse’s new boss Romano Albesiano gave a brief outline of their plans. The Italian factory will continue to work with the IODA Racing team for 2014 to collect data on the electronics and tires, which they will use as input on an entirely new project being worked on for 2016.

This Is Pretty Much What the Monster 800 Will Look Like

With the advent of the Ducati Monster 1200, it was only a matter of time before Ducati’s middleweight liquid-cooled “Monster 800″ would be spotted, and unsurprisingly the machines have a great deal in common. The one big difference seems to be that the 821cc Monster gets a double-sided swingarm, which has become Ducati’s new way of differentiating between its big and medium displacement models of the same machine, see entry for Ducati 899 Panigale. With the spied Ducati Monster 800 looking ready for primetime, and a pre-fall launch isn’t out of the question. Giving us an excellent glimpse into what the Ducati Monster 800 would look like, Luca Bar has again used his Photoshop skills to render up images of the still unreleased “baby” Monster.

Given the competitive nature of the electric racing realm, its rare to see the big high-power bikes without their fairings, as teams are reluctant to reveal their secret sauce. Debuting the Mugen Shinden San this past weekend in Tokyo though, Team Mugen did just that, giving us a glimpse into the inner workings of the team’s 2013 race bike, the Mugen Shinden Ni. You don’t have to be an electron-head to get excited by these photos, as any race bike with a carbon fiber frame and swingarm is pretty drool-worthy, though the Shinden Ni’s carbon fiber battery enclosure does hide a great deal of the electric superbike’s geek factor. While the sheer size of the battery bike is impressive, it was expected when the Shinden was first announced.

Mugen Shinden San (神電 参) Electric Superbike Revealed

Mugen’s third purpose-built electric superbike for the Isle of Man TT, the Mugen Shinden San, has been revealed in Japan. Campaigning two machines for this year’s TT Zero race, Mugen has John McGuiness and Bruce Anstey at the helm of its “Shinden San” bikes, as the duo looks for a one-two finish in this year’s race. With MotoCzysz not racing at the Isle of Man this year, Mugen is a hot favorite to take the top podium spots, as well as crack the 110 mph barrier for electrics on the historic Snaefell Mountain Course (Mugen is targeting a 115 mph lap). An evolution on the company’s previous designs, the Shinden San fits 134hp — 10hp more than last year, thanks to a new smaller three-phase brushless motor provided by Mission Motors — into its 529lbs bulk.

Chatting with a couple of NASCAR fans recently, I was reminded that any competition is boring if you don’t care who wins. But if you do care, then even cars driving around in circles can be very compelling entertainment. Those NASCAR fans really cared about how their favorite drivers finished, and not only how they finished in the latest race, but what and how those drivers were doing off the track as well. Those fans had been captured by the personalities of those drivers. One of the things NASCAR does well is sell personalities. All major sports-related businesses do this to some extent, but some organizations do it better than others.

We already covered the Honda MSX125 monkey bike when it debuted at the start of this year, and at the time we knew that the tiny street-terror would be a world market machine. Confirming our hopes at the time of its launch, Honda Motor Corp. has announced that it intends to bring the MSX125 to the United States, renaming it the Honda Grom.

The 2013 Honda Grom will come with just under 10hp, and features a four-speed gearbox that is mated to a 125cc single-cylinder motor, which comes from the common-parts bin of the Japanese company’s popular Honda Wave 125i scooter. Fuel-injected, 225 lbs at the curb when topped-off with its 1.45 gallons of fuel, and priced at $2,999 MSRP, we think Honda hit its mark with an affordable, bulletproof, and fun grocery-getter.

Track day enthusiasts, we have found your perfect pit bike; new riders, we have the ideal machine for you to cut your teeth on, while still being “cool” in the eyes of your more experienced riding friends; and for those who are vertically challenged, your 29.7 inch inseam machine is ready.     It has been so long that I don’t even remember how registering 125cc vehicles works here in the USA. I think you have to register the vehicle, but don’t have to carry insurance and can’t ride on highways?

    Got myself a Yamaha Tricker XG 250 a couple of years ago. Very low seat, very light, 18 bhp and extremely nimble and manoeuvrable. Bought it just as a shopping bike but it has already 18.000 km on the clock. Also very low fuel consumption. Was developed by Yamaha as a city bike and build in Italy.

    the bike is manufactured in Thailand… the Thai baht is the base currency.
    The US is getting it at a cheaper rate than Europe.

    There are already hundreds of aftermarket parts for this bike… just search under ‘MSX’
    plastics are dirt cheap here.
    it wont be long before a US dealer picks up a range.

    The name ‘Grom’ is fine with me – IMO it’s got a positive connotation. Young surfers/skaters/snowboarders are commonly referred to as ‘groms’.

    Ummm. Am I missing something here. Why are people getting excited about an ugly 10hp monkey bike built for dwarfs? Looks silly by itself. Looks ridiculous and completely out of scale with an adult human being on top. Now, if I was an 8-year-old boy I might be interested. But at $2999.00 retail you’re probably paying $3500 out the door with prep and tax. That’s what I paid in 2012 for my 2011 DR650se in showr00m condition. This seems to be a toy for teenagers or rich guys with money to burn. Have people lost their minds? And what’s with the name “Grom”. Urban dictionary says “grom” refers to “young skateborder/surfer”. I guess this really was designed to appeal to brain-dead 16-year-olds.

    I don’t know about it, I really like it but it looks very diminutive for a “complete” bike. The pricing will have a lot to do with its popularity.
    Here in Québec, Canada, 125cc bikes are in a lower registration bracket which means it’s less costly than 400cc, open-class or sportbikes but even then, let’s admit that the CBR125 don’t seem to be flying out the doors of the dealerships even with the 2012 being priced at $2299 instead of the full $3499 price.
    In fact right now I’m more interested in the Suzuki GW250 I’ve seen at the bike show but it has not even been announced by suzuki canada yet and if they price it anywhere near the TU250 it won’t sell. ($5299 while the CBR250′s full price is $4499 plus some rebates, I like the TU but an air-cooled sohc single without fairing should not cost more than a liquid-cooled dohc faired bike. Even with optional ABS the CBR is cheaper than the Tu250 which can’t have ABS.)
    So if the GW fails to materialize or is just plain too expensive for a small bike, the little 125 might be a good option for a guy like me who is looking to ride for cheap, plus this Grom looks way better than the CBR125. But then again, unless it is cheaper than the CBR125, I can’t see anyone wanting to spend more for what looks like less bike.
    Bonus question: Do you think there will be aftermarket support to make these faster/better or will they only stay moped-fast?

    @Matt: An Ohlins rep just announced that they are making a TTX fork and shock kit for this bike.

    I’m going to get the Ohlins forks and rear shocks for this bad MF. I’m also going for the full carbon brake discs and monobloc calipers to slow this little rocket down.

  27. For those who don’t get it, this little bike fills a number of niches, pretty much otherwise only filled by scooters. Every race team in the world buys a number of scooters so there pit teams can get around racetracks quickly and efficiently. Which would you rather be riding, a scooter or one of these?

    And for every 14-year-old teenager whose about to get their learners permit on their birthday, and wants a motorcycle to ride to school, this is a parents perfect choice. With a real suspension and fat grippy tires, it’s not only much more fun to ride, it’s much more capable and safer under every road condition. Plus it’s power level is perfect for the novice rider.

    It’s also the perfect kind of transportable backup transportation, mounted to an RV, Kept at a vacation home, or even inside of one’s apartment in the city, where you have to worry about parking or your scooter getting stolen if left outside.

    And as far as the less developed world where this qualifies as his primary transportation, Africa, South America, southern Asia where fuel consumption is a major issue, I suspect these little guys will be very very popular.

    To the doubters out there..this bike has been in Thailand for a few months already.
    It is awesome fun!.
    I have spent a lot of time riding one and they are great (I am 6’0″)… no problem with ergonomics. This is a perfect run around.
    Check out the Thailand aftermarket sites… even Honda themselves have a big after market range. I am sure some enterprising company will make it available stateside. There is already an Ohlins shock in the official catalogue.

    Actually, I think this is how traditional manufacturers are going to compete with the electrics. By producing low cost fuel efficient bikes at a third the cost of electrics.

    The Grom likes like a gas version of the Brammo Empulse or the new Zero DS…

    @Westward I think it’s an interesting comparison against electrics.

    The 2013 Zero XU ZF2.8 is probably the closest comparison IMO, as the lowest-cost Zero bike.

    The Zero is much more expensive @ $8k vs $3k.

    Both weigh 225 pounds.

    The Zero is both quick (< 6s 0-60) and fast (77 mph top speed) .. as it should be, with 27 hp. Grom's 9 hp probably will have trouble reaching 70 mph, and the Zero won't be riding at 70 mph for long (17 mile range @ steady 70 mph).

    At more moderate speeds, the Zero has more useful range, 24 miles @ steady 55 mph, 29 miles @ mixed city/55 mph riding. It still might be a bike that you might want to charge twice per day; in pit service it COULD be easy enough to keep plugged in when you're not running around.

    Fuelly users report the CBR125R gets about 80 mpg. If Grom does similarly, then that's around 120 miles/tank from a tiny 1.5 gallon tank. That's better than any electric bike except for perhaps the $16k Zero S ZF11.4; but for some applications an overnight-charging electric will be far more convenient.

    It’s an interesting idea to compare the lightweight internal combustion bike to a lightweight electric bike, but after a quick jolt on cycle-ergo to compare the Grom to the other bikes I am interested in, I think I completely lost any attraction to the naked Honda. Putting my long-legged 34″ inseam and 5’10″ frame on this bike, the 250s and a 2013 Zero S (the site does not have many Zero bikes), the Grom is really diminutive! The videos must have been done with someone much smaller than me (after all it is a bike mostly for asian markets and I really don’t mean to be rude but the population average height is different from a country to another), the 12″ wheels make it hard to guess the size of the bike on pictures.
    Then again, if it is mega-cheap, it could still be a blast to ride around town and go to work on, but the cbr125 is way more bike if the prices are close.
